Discovering bed bugs is an upsetting experience. Understanding exactly what professional treatment involves — the preparation required, the treatment process itself and what to expect afterwards — will help you manage the situation effectively and achieve the best possible outcome.
Before Treatment: Preparation
Preparation by the occupant is essential to the success of bed bug treatment. The more thoroughly you prepare, the more effective the treatment will be. Your Pest Protect technician will advise you on the specific steps required for your property, but typically these include:
- Wash all bedding, curtains, clothing and soft furnishings that have been in the affected room at 60°C or above, or tumble dry on high heat for 30 minutes - Place items that cannot be washed in sealed plastic bags for at least 72 hours at high temperature (a hot car in summer can work) - Vacuum the mattress thoroughly on all sides, paying attention to seams and tags; seal and dispose of the vacuum bag immediately - Remove clutter from around the bed and from under the bed to allow technician access - Do not move furniture or clothing to other rooms, as this risks spreading the infestation
The First Treatment Visit
The first treatment visit typically takes 1–3 hours depending on the number of rooms affected. Our technician will: - Inspect all sleeping areas and any other affected rooms - Apply professional-grade insecticide to all harbourage areas: mattress seams, bed frame joints, headboard fixings, skirting boards, carpet edges, behind electrical sockets and switch plates, inside wardrobe bases and other furniture joints - Provide a written report detailing the treatment carried out and any additional advice
You will be asked to vacate the property for 2–4 hours and to keep children and pets out until surfaces are dry.
The Second Treatment Visit (10–14 Days Later)
The second visit is essential. Bed bug eggs are highly resistant to insecticide. They hatch 6–10 days after the first treatment, and the second visit treats this new generation of emerging nymphs before they can reach reproductive maturity.
The second visit follows the same process as the first, with particular attention to areas of highest activity identified during the first visit.
The 6-Month Guarantee
All Pest Protect bed bug treatments come with a 6-month guarantee. If live bed bugs are found within 6 months of treatment, we will return and re-treat free of charge. This guarantee is conditional on the required preparation having been carried out and on not introducing new infestation from outside the property.
After Treatment: Ongoing Monitoring
After treatment, use mattress encasements to trap any surviving bugs and make future inspection easier. Inspect the mattress seams weekly for the first month after treatment. If you notice any signs of renewed activity — new bites, live bugs or fresh dark spots — contact us immediately.
