Concerns about the safety of pest control chemicals are entirely understandable. Many homeowners worry about the impact of treatments on their children, pets and the local environment. At Pest Protect, we take these concerns seriously and have built our treatment protocols around the principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
What is Integrated Pest Management?
IPM is a sustainable approach to pest control that prioritises non-chemical methods first and uses pesticides only when necessary, at the minimum effective dose, in the most targeted way possible.
The IPM hierarchy is: 1. Prevention — removing conditions that attract and sustain pests 2. Physical controls — sealing entry points, removing harborage, installing deterrents 3. Biological controls — where applicable and commercially available 4. Chemical controls — using the safest, most targeted product in the appropriate formulation
The Products We Use
All pest control products used in the UK must be approved under the Control of Pesticides Regulations (COPR) and the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR). We use only approved products applied by qualified technicians trained to the British Pest Control Association Certificate of Proficiency.
We favour gel baits and crack and crevice applications over broad surface sprays wherever possible. Gel baits are applied in tiny quantities directly into harbourage areas, reducing overall chemical use while maximising effectiveness at the pest.
Safety for Children and Pets
We advise clients on appropriate preparation and post-treatment precautions for each treatment type. For most treatments, the property can be reoccupied within 2–4 hours once treated surfaces are dry. We clearly explain any specific precautions required for treatments in properties with young children, pregnant women, elderly residents or pets.
Rodent Control Without Secondary Poisoning
Traditional rodenticides carry a risk of secondary poisoning to predators such as owls and foxes. Where possible and appropriate, we use first-generation anticoagulants rather than the more persistent second-generation products, and place bait only in tamper-proof stations that prevent access by non-target species.
