London has hundreds of pest control companies. From sole traders to large national contractors, the range of quality, price and professionalism varies enormously. Choosing the wrong company can mean ineffective treatment, unsafe chemical use, and no recourse when the problem returns. Here is what to look for.
1. Are they BPCA or NPTA registered?
The British Pest Control Association (BPCA) and the National Pest Technicians Association (NPTA) are the two main professional trade bodies in the UK. Membership requires technicians to hold relevant qualifications, maintain continuing professional development, and operate to a code of conduct. BPCA members are audited against the British Standard for Pest Management (BS EN 16636).
Pest Protect technicians are fully qualified and operate to BPCA standards.
2. Are they fully insured?
Any professional pest control company should hold public liability insurance of at least £5 million. Ask to see the certificate. This protects you if any damage occurs to your property during treatment.
3. Are their technicians qualified?
Look for the RSPH Level 2 Award in Pest Management or the BPCA Certificate of Proficiency. These are the recognised qualifications for UK pest control technicians. Using an unqualified technician to apply pesticides may be illegal in some circumstances.
4. Do they provide a written treatment report?
After every treatment, you should receive a written report detailing the pest identified, the products used (including active ingredients and application rates), the areas treated, and any recommendations. This is essential for compliance purposes and protects you in any dispute.
5. Do they offer a written guarantee?
Reputable companies back their work with a written guarantee. For rodents, expect a minimum of 6 months. Bed bugs: 6 months. Cockroaches: 3–6 months. A guarantee without follow-up visits is meaningless — check that the guarantee includes return visits if the pest activity persists.
6. Are they transparent about the chemicals they use?
All pesticide products used in the UK must be approved under the Control of Pesticides Regulations. Ask the company what products they intend to use and request Safety Data Sheets if you have children, pets or specific health concerns.
7. Can they provide references or verifiable reviews?
Genuine Google reviews from verified customers are the most reliable form of social proof. Be cautious of companies with no reviews or only recent 5-star reviews without detailed content.
8. Are they available for emergency response?
For many pest situations — a wasp nest near a front door, a rat in a restaurant kitchen, bed bugs discovered before guests arrive — same-day response is essential. Confirm the company's availability before you need them.
