Moth Infestation: How to Protect Your Carpets and Clothing

Clothes moths and carpet moths have made a significant comeback in London. Find out how to identify an infestation, save your belongings and eliminate the problem.

Clothes moths (Tineola bisselliella) and carpet moths (Trichophaga tapetzella) have been on the rise across London for the past decade. Warmer winters and centrally-heated homes have extended their active season and allowed populations to establish year-round. The result is significant damage to natural fibre carpets, rugs, clothing and soft furnishings — often running into thousands of pounds.

The Biology of the Problem

It is important to understand that adult moths do not cause damage. The damage is done entirely by the larvae — small, cream-coloured caterpillars that feed on natural fibres including wool, cashmere, silk, cotton, linen, feathers and fur. Synthetic fibres are not affected unless they are blended with natural fibres or soiled with food or sweat.

Moth larvae prefer dark, undisturbed areas. The backs of wardrobes, under heavy furniture, in seldom-used spare rooms and stored clothing are the most vulnerable areas.

Signs of a Moth Infestation

- Irregular bare patches in carpets, particularly in corners, under furniture and along skirting boards - Holes in woollen or cashmere clothing, blankets or throws - Small cream-coloured larvae or silky webbing in affected areas - Shed cases (pupal cases) that look like grains of rice - Adult moths flying in low, irregular patterns near affected areas

Why Moths Are Hard to Eliminate

The moth life cycle means that by the time you notice damage, the infestation is already well established. Eggs are tiny and invisible to the naked eye. Larvae actively avoid light and disturbed areas. Pupae can remain dormant for months. Pheromone traps catch adult males but do not eliminate larvae or eggs.

Professional Treatment

Pest Protect's moth treatment uses a UV fogging machine to deliver insecticide to all harbourage areas within a room, combined with direct spray treatment to carpets, skirting boards and wardrobe interiors. This multi-method approach addresses all life stages and reaches areas impossible to treat manually.

Protecting Your Belongings

After treatment: - Store seasonal clothing in sealed, hard-sided containers or vacuum storage bags - Cedar blocks and lavender sachets can deter moths but will not eliminate an infestation - Dry-clean or hot-wash clothing before storing for the season - Regularly vacuum under furniture, in corners and along skirting boards
