Waking up with unexplained bites is alarming, and bed bugs are often the first thing people fear. However, many other causes can produce similar symptoms. This guide will help you determine whether bed bugs are the likely culprit — and what else you should look for to confirm.
What Bed Bug Bites Look Like
Bed bug bites typically present as: - Small, red, raised welts on exposed skin - Often in a line or cluster of 3–5 bites (sometimes described as "breakfast, lunch and dinner") - Intensely itchy, often more so than mosquito bites - Appearing on areas exposed during sleep: shoulders, arms, neck, face and legs - Delayed reaction is common — bites may not appear for 1–3 days after feeding
What They Are Not
Bed bug bites are difficult to distinguish from bites by other insects. Medical professionals cannot reliably diagnose bed bug bites from the bite itself. The key difference lies in the evidence in the environment.
Other Common Causes of Night-Time Bites
*Fleas* — bites concentrated on ankles and lower legs. Pet in the household is a key indicator. Fleas jump and may be seen.
*Mites (bird or rodent mites)* — bites often intensely itchy and widespread. Associated with birds nesting above or rodent activity in the property.
*Mosquitoes* — bites appear as a single raised welt. More common near water in summer.
*Allergic reaction or skin conditions* — heat rash, eczema and contact dermatitis can all produce bite-like symptoms without any insect involved.
How to Confirm Bed Bugs
Because the bite appearance alone is unreliable, confirmation requires environmental evidence:
1. Inspect the mattress seams — look for dark brown or black spots (faecal matter), shed skins, tiny white eggs, or live bugs (reddish-brown, 4–5mm, flat when unfed) 2. Check the bed frame and headboard — particularly joints, screw holes and crevices 3. Examine bedside furniture — backs of frames, inside drawers, behind electrical sockets 4. Look for blood spots on the sheets or pillowcases 5. Notice any sweet, musty odour near the sleeping area — a distinctive smell associated with larger infestations
What to Do Next
If you find environmental evidence of bed bugs, do not attempt DIY treatment with shop-bought products — these will not eliminate the infestation and may disperse bugs to other rooms.
