How to Deter Foxes from Your London Garden

Urban foxes are a growing issue across London. Here is a practical guide to humane deterrents that actually work — and the ones that do not.

Urban fox populations in London are among the densest in the world. Approximately 10,000 foxes live within the M25, with territories of just 25–50 hectares in suburban areas. Most of the time, foxes and humans coexist without serious conflict. But when foxes establish a den in a garden or start causing persistent damage, action is needed.

The Problems Foxes Cause

- Garden damage: Digging in lawns, flowerbeds and vegetable patches in search of earthworms, grubs and cached food - Bin raiding: Overturning wheelie bins and scattering waste - Fouling: Fox droppings on lawns, patios and children's play areas - Noise: Territorial screaming calls during the breeding season (December–February) - Damage to outbuildings: Denning under decking, in sheds or under outbuildings

Why Lethal Control Does Not Work

Killing foxes is not a long-term solution to urban fox problems. Fox territories are quickly recolonised by neighbouring animals once a territory becomes vacant. Culling programmes have been consistently shown to be ineffective at reducing urban fox populations. The only durable solutions are exclusion and deterrence.

Deterrents That Work

*Physical exclusion*: The most effective long-term solution. Securing the perimeter of decking, sheds and outbuildings with mesh panels prevents denning. Fences need to be at least 1.8m high and extend 30cm underground to prevent digging underneath.

*Scent deterrents*: Commercial fox repellent products (such as Scoot or Get Off) exploit the fox's territorial scent marking behaviour by masking the existing scent and creating an unfamiliar territory signal. These require regular re-application, especially after rain.

*Motion-activated deterrents*: Water sprinklers triggered by motion sensors are effective in garden areas. Ultrasonic devices have limited evidence of effectiveness.

Removing Attractants

Most fox problems can be reduced significantly by removing the food attractants that draw foxes to a garden: - Use wildlife-proof bins or secure lids with bungee cords - Never leave pet food outdoors overnight - Use hanging bird feeders with seed-catching trays - Remove windfall fruit regularly - Secure compost bins
