Feral pigeons are a fact of life in London, but when they establish roosting or nesting sites on your building, the consequences go well beyond inconvenience. This guide explains the risks, the legal position and the deterrent options available.
The Risks Posed by Pigeons
Structural damage: Pigeon droppings are highly acidic. Over time, they erode stonework, brickwork, metal fixtures and painted surfaces. A persistent roosting site can cause significant and costly damage to a building's fabric.
Health risks: Pigeon droppings can contain Psittacosis (ornithosis), Salmonella and Cryptococcus fungi. Dried droppings that become airborne as dust are a particular inhalation risk for people working on affected buildings.
Blocked gutters and drains: Nesting materials — straw, twigs and feathers — accumulate in gutters and downpipes, causing blockages and water ingress. This can lead to damp, rot and structural damage.
Attracting other pests: Pigeon nests harbour bird mites, flies and beetles. When pigeons vacate a nest, these parasites can migrate into the building in search of a new host.
The Legal Position
Pigeons are not a protected species in the UK, but all wild birds are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. This means you cannot kill or harm pigeons without a General Licence issued by Natural England. The most effective and legally sound approach is deterrence and exclusion rather than killing.
Deterrent Options
*Anti-roosting spikes* — installed on ledges, window sills, parapets and roof ridges. The most cost-effective solution for long, narrow roosting surfaces. Modern spike systems are discreet and do not harm the birds.
*Netting systems* — the most comprehensive solution for excluding pigeons from large areas such as roof terraces, light wells and under bridges. Properly installed nets have a lifespan of 10+ years.
*Post and wire systems* — a near-invisible system of tensioned wires that prevent pigeons from landing on ledges and flat surfaces. Used on heritage buildings and listed structures where spikes would be aesthetically unacceptable.
*Optical deterrents* — reflective tape, predator decoys and hawk kites can provide temporary deterrence but are rarely effective long-term as pigeons habituate to them.
